What are the healthiest carbohydrates?

Carbohydrates are biomolecules that have structural and energetic functions. They can be found isolated or associated with other biomolecules such as proteins and lipids. Carbohydrates have been highly demonized, reducing their energy properties, but the truth is that they are a nutrient that we need to ingest between 55 and 60% of our daily diet in order for our body to function properly. The important thing is to choose the healthiest carbohydrates, those of higher quality, and those that will provide us with greater nutritional enrichment.

Here we show you the most representative:

Oatmeal

Oatmeal has a high content of vegetable proteins, vitamins (B1, B6, C, E...), minerals (iron, magnesium, zinc...), and fiber. Some products made from oats are instant oatmeal, muesli, cookies, oatmeal, or oat milk. It is recommended to introduce it at breakfast.

Legumes

Lentil, and chickpea. They are plant-based foods rich in carbohydrates. They have approximately twice the protein of grain cereals which, together with their high content of dietary fiber, vitamins (B1, B9...), and minerals (iron...), make them essential foods and suitable for vegans or vegetarians.

Quinoa

Quinoa is a cereal with significant fiber content, in addition to vegetable protein. It is enriched with omega-6 and omega-3 acids and vitamins such as type B. It offers longer-lasting satiety and keeps the body's energy level stable due to its low glycemic index, which makes it ideal for weight control processes. It is a good alternative as a protein source for vegans or vegetarians. It does not contain gluten, so it is also good for celiacs.

Brown rice

It is a healthier alternative to white rice since white rice is subjected to a refining process by which it loses part of its nutritional value. The integral is rich in proteins, fiber, calcium, potassium, magnesium, and vitamins such as A and B3, in addition to having a low glycemic index, reducing the increase in insulin in the blood and causing greater satiety.

Wholemeal pasta

Whole wheat pasta contains all the nutritional parts of the original grain, making it a valuable source of B vitamins, iron, protein, and fiber. Its glycemic index is low, which promotes long-lasting energy and appetite control. You have to choose pasta labeled as 100% whole grain or whole grain pasta such as wheat, spelled, or brown rice as its main ingredients.
